Too young?

Do you think 20 months is too young for speech therapy? He only says about 5 words and babbles a lot.

No harm in trying to get the ball rolling. I hope things will be differentfor you, but my daughter is 5 and her doctor said it's down ti the school and the school said she's still to young. She cannot procounce her R's, not even slightly and i've tried to help her myself. It's so upsetting when you want the best but it always seems out of reach. :(

The earlier the better. It never hurts to get an evaluation done.
They may not qualify for services just yet. Most toddlers hit a word bomb between 18-26m. 
If babe has good receptive communication and isn’t behind in other areas of development, they may not qualify until after 24m. 
We had our daughter evaluated at 22m through early intervention. She only had like 3-5 verbal words and 10-15 words in asl. Her receptive communication was excellent and she exceeded in most other areas of development, it was only her expressive communication that was lagging. We all decided she’s just stubborn and we’d give her 4-6m and reevaluate if need be. Between 24-26m, she went from those 3-5 words to 300+. It just clicked for her. 
Remember what counts as a word!

The earlier the better. If you get an evaluation and your little one qualifies for speech services definitely do it. If there really is an issue, the sooner services are started the better the outcomes.

I accidentally voted yes but no it's not too young. My youngest started speech therapy at 20 months because he wasn't saying any words at all, or babbling. His speech was that of a 7 month old according to his assessment. He's 3 now & talks a lot now.

You can always ask your pediatrician if you they think it's necessary if you're feeling worried, but some babies just talk later and its not always indicative of a problem. My son didn't have a whole lot to say until he was about 2.5. He would get SO frustrated, because he knew what he wanted, but he just couldn't find the words. The doctor said he was perfectly fine, he was just a late talker. She suggested he'd likely have a "vocabulary explosion" and thats exactly what happened. He went from a handful of words to full sentences in a very short time frame. Its always worth checking with your doctor though, it can never hurt to get their opinion.

My son is almost and is starting next month. He only says mama and dads, but he is also autistic. I don’t think speech therapy could ever be to soon. If you’re concerned and his Dr. then do it
