So me and my boyfriend were discussing our taxes and who’s going to claim our kids etc. I’ve been a SAHM for 2 years so I haven’t been employed anywhere but I did clean houses throughout 2023. Obviously I don’t really have proof of that because I was always paid in cash but can I file my taxes off of that? If so what would I say and could I claim my kids? Would I owe the IRS? I’ve never tried to file before with unreported income. If I can’t file them my boyfriend will claim the kids whenever he does his taxes just wondering if anyone has been able to file with an income situation like this?

But you did have income. You’re supposed to report your income- cash or not and pay taxes on it. You should’ve kept a log of income, expenses and receipts, miles, dates, etc. You still need to pay taxes on cash. I would take some time to get your “books” in order and file as self-employed. Depending on the amount you made, how you spoke with clients, how much you spent and drove- you can write off quite a bit. It’d benefit you to learn about self employment and taxes for the future. 
Whomever supports your children for 6 or more months out of the year is who claims them. Look into the rules for filing without income if you’re choosing not to do part one.

Is he the father? Or is the father going to try and claim them? As self employed, you are earning income. As long as you have a social security number, you are entitled to the child tax credit, earned income credit. The kids balance out owing. Depends how much you are demonstrating. You can also write off expenses. Day care/summer camp expenses. Student loan interest. College expenses. Anything else has to be more than the standard deduction. You may have to fight for the state where they ask you for everything under the sun and still may not give it to you. But you are fully entitled to the federal. Head of household. Single parent with kids. Depends how much you declare if you owe or not. Like 15k-20k? How much did you earn?

He cant claim dependents unless hes their father. You can file your taxes regardless, especially if you're claiming children. Get a 1099 going and report your income/expenses from that because you cannot file with your boyfriend cause you're not married.

In the future, keep a log of all the money you are paid and the dates you are paid it. You need to file taxes based on that income. And then you can claim your kids. It’s actually illegal to not do this and you need to do the right thing and right by your kids. You wouldn’t owe taxes with what you made, but you could get child tax credit deductions.
