What am I meant to do now
Background: over 15years experience working in schools mainly aged 9-11 year olds. Teaching assistant, one to one support, hlta.
Also 3 years experience working in child protection field (supporting vulnerable families writing reports etc)
I’ve been out of schools for 3 years due to maternity leave, covid times and then redundancy (I then went to work in cp)
My youngest is four and at a pre school so I decided I should go back into schools (works better with child care hours etc).
I got offered a job (I went for a role lower than my qualifications and experience just to ease me in after so long etc)
This job have bent over backwards to get me and offered me all the days and hours I wanted etc
However I started today and I’m gobsmacked.
I’ve been put with 5/6 year olds (I have no experience or desire to work with this age group if I’m really honest) on top of this out of 30 children 15 are high needs (runners, defiant, low level ed, and one is still in nappies (no medical needs).
This schools policy is all about positive reinforcement (which is great) but there looks to be no consequences!!
These children can and do walk out the class when they want, roll around on the floor when should be listening, refuse to follow any instruction etc etc (I could go on but it will take all day).
My role seemed to consist of babysitting (which I do not want to do) and trying to explain to those few children who want to learn what 5+3 is!
Help
What should I do I can’t really afford to not go back but another day in there feels me with dread
