Is my manager right ?

Do you think my manager is right in this situation? 
I am a supervisor at my job. An employee who was gonna start their shift at 7:30am tried to call me at 6am and call off. I was still sleeping because  I worked a later shift and had my alarm set for 7:30.  
Since I didn’t answer the phone, the employee called my manager next. She answered her. 
When I got to work my manager had a talk with me and said that I need to “set an alarm or something” and be awake at 6am every morning  in case someone calls off. 
That made me kind of mad because that’s my personal time. Not work hours. I’m not on the clock. She’s not going to tell me when I can and can’t sleep. 
Do you think she’s right ? Or me ??

You are not on call. You do not have to work outside of scheduled hours

No, your manager is wrong. An employee calling off needs to call whatever supervisor/manager is already going to be there when they are supposed to be there, not one that comes in later or is off.

I think your ringer should be on if this is how you call in for work. I do not think you just need to be up waiting for calls.

Is your manager on salary? If so , it’s appropriate for her to be called no matter the hours, are you on salary? If so, that sucks cuz technically they can tell you that crap. If you are hourly, then kindly tell your manager the earliest you will be able to answer your phone for working hours.

She's absolutely in the wrong. If she wants you to do that, then she needs to pay you for those on-call hours.

You’re right. It is your personal time. There should be a protocol of calling in of maybe an email to you and the manager, but at the same time, nothing either of you can do at that hour except then send out a mass message for people who might want to come in

If you are the only one responsible for finding coverage every day in case of acall out, then that needed to be specified when you took the job and paid accordingly.

She’s wrong, and if she does want you to to take a call that early she will need to pay you call out, which at my work is equal to 1 hours pay, even if it was a 2 minute call…. Suggest this to your manager, then see what she says 🤭
