I’m so proud!- autism talk

ash mum of 5, twin mum

I needed to tell someone, anyone & everyone!

My five year old son has autism and his behaviour is extremely challenging at times. He can be quite violent in his meltdowns, which isn’t his fault he just can’t process his feelings safely yet, we’re working hard on that.. but this means going to outings (without me) or going to classmates birthday parties is something we avoid in order to keep other children safe as well as keeping my son regulated. (Don’t get the wrong idea we go out often exposure therapy is very important but if I’m unable to be there and stay there with him we don’t go incase he needs me..) well today his class had a school trip out to a zoo. I was hesitant at first because he’s so unpredictable I didn’t know if he would cope, but I spoke to his teacher and we arranged for him to have a 1 on 1 teacher incase he tried to elope or incase he was becoming overwhelmed and the other adults were too busy to realise (because obviously I fully understand the other children absolutely need the same sort of attention as he does so it’s easy to miss his little tell signs until it’s too late) so I felt a little more comfortable and thought why not give it a go he has to try venturing out eventually..

He had an incredible day. I’ve been sent pictures by teachers and he’s not stopped talking about it since he’s got home, he’s just gone to bed and literally fell asleep talking about it, although I don’t get to hear a lot of details he’s very vague 🤣🤣 but even hearing how happy he is whilst speaking about the trip has made me so happy. I’m so so proud of my son.
