Too Personal?

I was getting to know a guy who sent me a message via dating site. 2 weeks go by and he asked me on a coffee date, I accepted. The next day, I randomly asked him his last name and he refused to tell me. Is this too personal? What are your thoughts?

I'm bold and daring. If someone I'm about to meet asks for my last name, I see no problem in that. I am proud and have nothing to hide.

This guy clearly got upset and we didn't meet. He text saying "hey, I think it's best if we don't meet. Hope you find someone awesome. " I'm baffled. I don't think it's that big of deal. But he clearly does.
