GENDER IDENTITY: Someone you should know: Judith Butler
Judith Butler is an American philosopher and gender theorist who argues that no one is born one gender or the other. Rather, Butler argues, gender is performative. We act and walk and speak and talk in ways that consolidate an impression of being a man or a woman.
Rather than being something that is simply true about us from the beginning, Butler sees gender as something that is being produced and reproduced all the time. "To say gender is performative," Butler says, "is to say that nobody really is a gender from the start."
