Is voting a privilege or a right?

Question

Going off of my other topic: should prisoners be allowed to vote, is voting a privilege or a right?

If you think it's a right, then do certain rights apply to those who are incarcerated, but not other rights?

If you think it's a privilege, who has the authority to determine which groups are granted this privilege?

I think before it was thought of as a privilege (when females weren't allowed to vote)

But in my books it is MOST DEFINITELY a right. I don't understand how anyone, ESPECIALLY WOMEN, could think it's okay to not let people vote. After all, we weren't allowed to vote for a long time.

If the president or government effects you directly in any way shape or form, YES you should get a say. NO it's not a privilege. Yes some rights you do have to give up in prison, but voting should NOT be one of them.

I don't understand how people don't think it's a right. Ok, you commit a felony, you do your time. Does this not make you a citizen of the United States? Does this mean that you should have your basic human rights taken away? That's kinda fucked up IMO.

In the UK many women died for the right to vote.... The suffragettes.... Its a privilege to do it now due to them fighting for our rights x

I distinguish between rights and privilege based on the basic human rights we need in society. Privileges and some rights can be forfeited when a crime is committed. Rights, such as basic human rights are necessities like food, water, shelter, medical, equality, and human decency.

As, a society we have already decided what rights/privileges we have based on our constitution and laws. Our basic human rights cannot be forfeited no matter the cost.

Can we go back and narrow the scope of how much the government can infringe upon? Yes. We do this every day through legislation and policies.

I feel like it's a priveledge because only citizens get to do it. When you become a citiszen you have earned the privilege. If it was a right you would have it no matter what. Even minors have rights, but cannot vote. It's not on the same level as the right to free speech or religion which are inalienable.

Its definitely a right, but my feelings on that are if you are a danger to society and secluded from the rest of us, you shouldn't be making decisions that will impact the people you were a danger to and the people you're separated from.
