Should children be allowed to listen to songs that promote violence such as killing, rape, etc?

Personally I won't let my children but this question confuses me. Are you asking on a personal level or should all children? Cause I don't know how you monitor that.

I've personally never heard of songs promoting rape or murder. I mean it's definitely mentioned in songs but is it really put out there in a positive light? It's a parents job to teach their kids right and wrong and explain the difference between reality and fantasy like songs games and movies. It's also a parents job to identify mental issues in their child and get them help when needed. I don't think songs make murders or rapists.

Well they have a rating for mature audiences due to explicit nature.   Same as if you were to watch a rated R movie. 
They arent for minors.

You can't hide kids from anything. I would rather let them listen to violent music, but then explain to them what is wrong with it, so they can continue to think critically

I would try and keep them from it. Thankfully in my experience young children don't tend to listen to the lyrics much less actually understand them, so for younger ones I don't think I'd really worry too much.

I think it depends. If it's a very young child, they likely won't understand what's going on in the song anyway. And older kids are more likely to understand that songs/video games/movies don't equal reality. That's not to say I'm going to chain my kids to a chair and show them violent media on repeat their entire lives. I'm just speaking as someone whose parents tried to shelter them: it didn't really work. I think having conversations works much better than trying to ban anything that's not G rated.

When I listen to songs that I LOVED and played on repeat as a child and preteen I realize how terrible the lyrics are. I knew the lyrics but didn't understand them. I feel I'm a happy and healthy adult. I think more goes into it than just music.

However, as a teacher I NEVER play songs that have questionable lyrics. It is not my place to expose children to music people find offensive.
