Would you continue to let your 16 year old hang out at night

My 16 year old hangs out at the skate park with friends late at night. last week they found the body of a 14 year old boy who was brutally raped and left in a ditch and yesterday a 17 year old was found naked. He survived but was beat so bad he doesn't remember who attacked him. He was also raped. They don't know if the attackers are the same person but nobodies been caught. I told my son he has to be back by dark but he has an attitude and thinks because he's a boy the chances of someone hurting him is slim to none and he can just fight them off. I'm trying to protect him, but maybe I'm overreacting?
