Mahsa Amini and our rights as Muslim women
I am a Muslim woman and thankfully have never had to live in a country where morality police and honor killings are common place but ny thoughts have been with the women of Iran so much recently. I am saddened and heartbroken that a 22 yr old woman died st the hands of someone else's interpretation of her morality and her faith. I wear a hijab and have since high school but it is my choice. I know many Muslim women who chose not to wear it for whatever reason and women who wear everything from shaylas and hijabs to burqas. But it should be our choice and our decision on what we want to do and wear. I am no more Muslim or moral than one of my Muslim sisters who doesn't wear it. I was born in India and we moved to London when I was 13 and moved to the usa at 26. Every place I lived honor killings have happened as has mass shame and life changing rumors done at the hands if men who think they have that right. That is not what Allah teaches and that is not what it is to be Muslim and I hate my faith being twisted. To counties who require it and to countries bow banning them all together...let it be our choice. It is very personal amd we should have the say....and I should be afraid of death, loss of job or family shame due to MY choice. I am Mahsa and I feel for her and her loved ones and am so proud of my sisters in Iran making their voices heard at the risk of death. Wearing a yarmulke, turban, hijab, gold gross on your neck or rosary beads....all of that is personal and should be nobodies say but the person whose self it is. If you are Muslim or know Muslim women check in on your female loved ones and see that they are ok and if you aren't or don't know any Muslims please don't judge our faith off of the bad you see in the news. It is a loving and wide reaching faith and true Muslims don't want hate, violence, and death. As-Salaam-Alaikum my friends.
