test or no?

Okay, so Christmas weekend I got an awful cold along with spotting (filling less than a tampon a day) for the first day then I filled a tmapon the second day and the third was light brown blood. I just assumed it was a early/light period, but I'm wondering if I should test, my period is due today. My body is producing a lot of mucus and I'm very moody. I just don't wanna test and get a bfn... again. Have any ladies been through this?
