Putting in notice for work?

If I know I'm leaving in a few months and moving away, should I give my current job more than two weeks notice?

I wouldn't. I live in an employment at will state and if a company gets wind you're leaving, they'll make it happen faster. It's horrible but it happens. If you have job security, then give the notice whenever you want.

I had a really great job, with excellent pay and great hours. When I found out I was moving out of state I let them know over a month before hand. I had a great relationship with them, and if anything happened and our move didn't work out and I needed to come back I'd be able to come back and work for them.

Depends on if you work in an "employment at will" state or not, or if you are protected by a union contract. I've often seen people give extended or even a standard 2 week notice and be let go on the spot. So if you are relying on this income I wouldn't give more than 2 weeks notice.

Check what your contract says of course, as a first step. Then as others said, base it on whether you will be shut out of shifts or not, and if you feel nice and think a longer transition time would be beneficial, decide based on that.

When I left my job where 2 weeks was standard, I gave a month since I knew it'd be useful for training my replacement. My current contract is 3 months notice (standard where I live and in the country where my employer is based)

You can give them a week or two more if you want to so they can find someone for your job and you could possibly train them. But if your in any sort of job where your hours aren't guaranteed then I wouldn't at both my jobs people have done that and their shifts got cut majorly because the bosses didn't think that they should have to give a lot of hours to someone that's just leaving anyways. So I don't know it's up to you.

Yes, I gave notice in July that. Would be leaving in December... but more so because of the fact in the matter I moved to another state and kept having to fly back and forward for paperwork and to meet with the inspectors for my house
