Okay I'm not an historian nor politician but I'll do my best to inform about this:
In 1714 Spain conquered Catalonia and the castellian king started to reing over it, until now. From 1936 to 1975 there was a Dictator (Franco) in Spain who repressed everyone but specially the catalans forbidding the language and the culture.
After that, there was a really bad transition to democracy, and Catalonia wanted to start getting more independence. At first we wanted to be part of Spain but managing to get more money, because the spanish governemnt is getting 100% of our taxes and returning less than 50/40% (so we dont have money for school, health care or for even paying government's workers). The Spanish government did not allow it, and the independentist movement begin in 2012
From then, we've tried all ways to have a referendum, and the Spanish government would not allow it because they said that it was against the law. (It is important to know that the nowadays government is formed by people who followed Franco's ideals and who are basically nazis). The Spanish law was written shortly after Franco's desth in 1975 and has not ever been changed since then!
So, we eventually managed to make a referendum on the first of October (which was illegal according to the spanish law, but the catalan law approved of it) and the police came and beat hundreds of people up. One guy lost his eye  to the police's brutality. I was there and saw blood with my own eyes. They were hitting kidds and grandparents and whatever came in their way.
After this horrible day, the Spanish government said the referendum did not happen and that police brutaity was not a thing. The referendum was won by the independentist movement by a 90% of the votes or so. The president of catalonia actually declared the independence, but then suspended it (this was hard to understand for everyone, I still dont quite get it). Eventually -few weeks after- he proclamed catalonia was an independent state, and as a response the Spanish government put half of the catalan government in prision (without a judgement) and forced the other half to go to Belgium. The catalan president is in the moment still there, and have been for two months; and he can't come back or he will be imprisoned as well.
The Spanish president claimed we had to have new elections, and so it happened. Said elections where won by the exiliated  president's party, and now it is to see if he will be able to be the president from outside the country. This week is the investment in the Parliament and apparently the new president probelem will be resolved.

I'm from Scotland but Catalonia is my favourite place on earth and plan to move there when my children start school. I totally support and encourage the independence of Catalonia from Spain.

I'm less informed than I'd like to be. I have a Spanish friend, and she explained to me her perspective, but to be honest I don't know the political dynamics and history in Spain well enough to really grasp what she was saying well enough to form my own opinion. 
You should make an informative post about it!

I figure it's similar to the Quebec independence movement, and I don't agree with that. I don't think that regions or provinces should be able to independently declare independence.
