Giving gifts - is it the thought that counts?

Say you were given a gift that someone tried to make, but it was a total fail... is it the thought that counts, or should they have given you a different gift?

It’s a combination. My mom gave me some clothes for Mother’s Day that were supposed to be from my son (he’s 16 months old). They were not my style, were completely wrong for my body type, and weren’t my size. I’ve asked her on multiple occasions not to buy me clothes. When she asked my husband he advised her not to buy clothes. Now she’ll be returning her gift. And I don’t feel ungrateful. In that case, the thought didn’t count, I’m not keeping the clothes. My sons daycare gave me a flower made from a coffee filter and a popsicle stick that he helped make and it was the best thing I’ve ever received. It cost next to nothing, but the thought behind it meant everything. It’s completely situational.

Hmmm...how bad is this hypothetical fail? Is it like "I tried to brew homemade beer, but I think I failed and it's poisonous" level fail? I'm not gonna be grateful on my way to the ER. But I'll take a blanket with some messed up stitches.

Absolutely the thought. Just imagine how fucking dull and time consuming it was to put all those bottoms together... I would appreciate it very much even if it was a fail.

If it’s from a child. If an adult gave me that messed up button “bowl,” I would be kind of like uhh wtf am I going to do with this garbage? It’s useless, it will take up space. I would rather have no gift. We aren’t big on gifts in my family. I did have my baby shower over the weekend - someone made me a bunch of (ugly, sorry!) burp cloths, while that’s a fail, those are still useful so I appreciate them.

I personally hate anything people give me that i might be forced to display in my house. And it's a known fact,  so if someone gave me either of those,  they didn't use "thought" at all.

Thoughts count so much with gifts. I love a handmade gift, even if I don’t like it aesthetically. So much effort goes into putting something together or when someone tries to give you something unique to you. I keep handmade gifts more than store-bought. I believe most people do; I thought my husband was going to cry when he thought he lost a scarf I made him, but he found it and I don’t think I’ve seen him so relieved. Besides, what one person sees as a fail, another may see as a win. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Absolutely it's the thought that counts, if someone made me a gift, even if it was something I didn't really like, or if it was a "fail" then I would still appreciate the time, thought and effort that they put into making it for me. I'd know I had something unique and that came from the heart rather than some generic typical gift from a shop.

This year I am SO BROKE. I have literally 1$ in my wallet. So, I made her a macaroni necklace and colored each noodle. I'm hoping she will laugh cause I made them for her a a child. She also knows how broke I am so I dont think she'll be holding any grudges. Just gonna hang out with her and her noodle necklace lol
