Somebody’s Chelsea

Six months ago we lost my grandmother. It has been such a profound loss. One that I thought was going to be a long way off. My grandparents are only in their 60s. My parents just outta high school when they had me. Hell I even still have great grandparents. So I have been in shock to loss one of my grandmothers so suddenly.

One thing this loss has though me is about love. I have watched the strongest man that I know be brought to his knees by a loss so powerful it consumes him. He loved her with his whole heart. Just the thought of going on and being happy with out her is just too much for him at times. I have never seen this man cry. He was always the strong on in the family. But as we set her headstone this weekend I watch tears fall as he said, “ Do you like it baby? Good. I’ll be here to rest with you soon. Keep watch over the kids and grandkids. Love you sooo much sweetheart. And I miss you more than words could say.”

When he talks about their life together, he lights up. He talks about the good times and the bad. He takes the blame for their hard times, and gives her credit for all the love and laughter in their lives. He is the proudest man when he says that is my wife.

As we sit and look through pictures of what was, I see the love they shared. I think about what I want for my life. I want to be in a love that weathers the storm, that loves through the hard times. That keeps the vows the wrote for each other, beyond till death due us part.

That’s the kind of love we should all strive for!
