What do you do when you get a severe nose bleed?

My nose has started bleeding like crazy. I never get nose bleeds. Should I hold my head back, or pinch my nose, or just stuff tissue in? I have to leave for work soon. I haven't had a nose bleed since I was a kid. I guess I'll give it 10 mins, and see if it stops, then call the doctor if it doesn't stop.

Pinch the bridge of your nose (have a tissue to catch the blood) and tip your head forward. It seems counter intuitive, but it prevents you from aspirating your blood- meaning it won’t accidentally slip into your lungs.

Roll a paper towel and put it under your front lip - like up above your front teeth. That’s the vein that is bleeding in your nose and it cuts it off. Just put it there and if it’s not enough to hold pressure on it’s own. Push with your tongue too.

As the others said, don’t hold your head back - the blood is draining no matter your position, and in that position you just don’t see it because it’s going into your stomach and can make you sick. 
I used to have horrible daily nose bleeds - ice is the key. The cold helps your blood to clot. Hold your head straight or forward, pinch the bridge, and put ice on it. If it didn’t stop in 15 min or so, you may want it go to urgent care/ER or call your doctor. You may need cauterization of a blood vessel to stop it from happening in the future.
