Do you think it’s ok to show our daughters Disney movies where the protagonist is a bad influence? (Description)

I’m just curious what y’all think of this topic.

Like obviously a lot of the more recent Disney movies (Moana, Frozen, etc) that don’t revolve around a love interest and have much stronger female protagonists set better role models for our daughters.

I grew up on The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc. and I always imagined sharing in those movies with my daughter!

But my husband and I just recently rewatched The Little Mermaid and were kind of appalled by what a bad influence it sets. This girl is 16 and she defies her father because she’s “in love” with someone she laid eyes on once, and then she jeopardizes her father and the entire ocean community in her own selfishness? AND I noticed she never even apologizes to her father at the end, the end of the movie it’s the father who admits HE was wrong and gives her what she wants?

Obviously things like this set a TERRIBLE precedent and it made me cringe to think about my daughter someday watching movies like this. However, as someone who actually did watch these movies as a little kid, I don’t really think they influenced the way I think or my decision making or anything...? Granted, when I was like 5 I did think 16 was the age people got married (lol) but it’s not like I was actually desperate to get married, by the time I turned 16 Ariel was not my role model lol.

I’m just curious yalls opinion on this. Of course these movies have protagonists that are horrible female role models BUT do they actually affect our children’s thoughts and behavior or are they capable of recognizing that it’s just fiction?

Do you think it’s ok to let them watch these movies anyway? Do you let your daughter watch them (or if you don’t have a daughter, would you)?
