Asshole or hero?

This happened to my sister who moved into a large city apartment complex almost 2 years ago. All the units have a balcony that is very close to the neighbor's on all sides. 
About 4 months ago she started smelling something awful on her balcony. She's on the 5th floor and there's no way anything from the ground could reach her. She keeps her space super clean and there was no trash. So she assumed one of the other units had trash left on the deck or something, as you do. The smell got worse and at some point people are talking about this smell. 
Fast forward and one of her neighbors she usually talks to in the elevator told her what was. Directly next to his unit was the balcony of a mom and young son. The son was really into plants and he liked taking random weeds and putting them in pots on the balcony. One of the plants he happened to love was stink weed (idk if that's it's actual name. It's a green vine that has white flowers and REAKS like the worst human BO imaginable) 
He waited a few hours and the mom never took care of it after he asked her to. So he grabbed the plant he could reach and pulled it down. Unfortunately, the little pot it was in went over the rail but he cleaned it up and told the office what happened. The mom was called and she wasn't upset but the kid was. She said she was letting him have fun but didn't realize how smelly it was because she never went out on the patio. She also forgot after the guy talked to her. Her son liked this plant because "it smells like farts" according to him. 
I think that man is a hero frankly.

I really thought this was about to be about a dead body lmao glad I was wrong. I don’t think he went about it the right way, though. Should have talked to management and had them deal with it.

He's an asshole. The proper channels should have been taken. Either talk to the tennant and ask them to remove the plant, or report it to the office manager.
I have zero issue with the removal of the plant, but the fact that the guy felt so entitled to touch and destroy someone elses property is what I have a problem with.

I don't see anything wrong because it was a nuisance. If the kid was upset by it, it wouldn't be difficult to go to a nursery and buy him something not problematic and replace the pot. Or buy him a herb kit for him to get a full experience with gardening.

I voted grey area because my next step (after speaking to the mom) would have been to tell the office...but I'm sure he's a hero to the rest of the building.

I would say grey area. He did his best to fix the situation by going to the mother first. But his next step, after the mother ignored it or supposedly forgot about it, should have been to the office/management. I don’t think he should have taken it into his own hands and reached into her property to yank the plant out. I know it was an accident that the pot broke, but still. But I totally get it. If it smelled that terribly and the whole building complained, then I’d say he’s a hero to them.

If its bad enough its causing a problem then I wouldnt say he was being mean. I wouldnt want to pay rent at a place that smelled like a landfill.

It seems like the mom would of been very cooperative had he just went to her, or the building manager had spoken to her about it.

I voted gray area. I get why the neighbor did it and everyone is paying to live there and should be able to enjoy their living space without having to put up with a very strong bad smell. However I personally do not think it is ever ok to take or damage some one else's property just because it inconveniences you. I think the right move would have been to talk to her again, which probably would have worked since she said she forgot the first time, or talk to the manager or landlord. 
I don't think they where being an ass hole, I get why they did, I just also don't think it makes them a hero either.

The man is an entitled asshole. Go to the fucking property manager or whoever tf deals with that instead of destroying people’s personal property, especially a child’s.
