Do you think detention is necessary to have in schools?

Thinking back to when I was in school I always wondered what the point of detention was. There wasn’t really anything productive from it besides being in trouble for skipping a class, being late to class x amount of times, or teacher assigns it for whatever a student got in trouble for.

What I mean it’s not productive is whenever I had dentition, they just have you sit silently to stare at white walls until you leave. I don’t know how other schools have done.

Is detention really necessary? Why or why not
