To those who went away for college: did you ever have an AWFUL room mate?

Question

When I started telling people about my horrid room mate situation that happened a few years ago, it felt like every other person at my college had a very similar experience to the point it damaged their grades/social life as well. Did this ever happen to you? I feel it’s weirdly common with girls for some reason. 
If the college part doesn’t apply to you, have you ever had an awful room mate in general?

Absolutely. My first year at bible college, my roommate was a solid ten years older than me at least. I was 17 when school started. She had some emotional and anger management issues and when she was having a bad day or whatever, she would start moving all the furniture around in our room. I generally took that as my cue to bunk in with someone else in the dorm. She could be very pleasant, but when she was angry, watch out. She was not averse to throwing things, so flying projectiles were not uncommon. 😬 She was also engaged to a truly odd man I knew from my high school days through the bible quizzing program. He had a very inappropriate crush on me back then and it was just cringe-y and awkward having him around. He worked night security on campus and would come to our dorm in the middle of the night and call out to her. We lived on the second floor, so he was always pretty much shouting. She, of course, would throw open the window, inviting in a blast of -40C iciness to chill the room. Lovely. They would chat for ages with all kinds of lovey-dovey talk, which was just awkward and not pleasant to be an unwilling third party to. She was also not the cleanest person, so our room always had a bit of a funk going on. It wasn't lovely.

Oh yeah , I didn’t have one bad one I had three I moved three times . They were all insane one of them threaten to jump me over me defending myself respectfully may I add over something they said . And the second one also threaten to punch me because one of my friends said her name down the hall way and it “triggered” her and she already didn’t like me because I was “gross” which is far from true I never was in the room and showered around her prescence. And finally the last one almost set our dorm room on fire and she was very annoying never stopped talking, and probably the dumbest person iv ever met in my life . She was also rude but probably to dumb to realize she was being rude and very immature .

I've had quite a few unfortunately. It was bad. My first year they put 4 of us in one room which we had our own rooms but shared the bathroom, dining room and living room. I only became friends with one. The other two were loud, ghetto, and would have people over all hours. They would also eat our food even though it was labeled so I started keeping food in my room. Other times I've felt like the odd one out since my other roommates were roommates the year before so I was the newbie and we really didn't click so I moved to another apartment above. Then I became an RA and had my own townhouse on campus even my last year of college when I wasn't an RA I got to keep the townhouse because they thought it'd be too much of a hassle to have me move.

I only had one roommate in college as a freshman. We hit it off, bonded instantly, and shared an apartment our next three years in school. She is one of my true, lifelong friends.

My sophomore year I was in an apartment owned by the college. I shared a wall with the girl who made my second year a nightmare. I was in a sorority so for the first few weeks of classes I wasn’t around much cause we were getting ready for recruitment. I tried to say we needed to talk out some house rules since there was 4 of us and she said “you are never here, why should we have rules?”.
She left her tv on one night and left for hours. Her door was locked and I had an 8am. I left a note on her door and in retaliation she left one on my door, joke was on her I left my note on my door during parents weekend and she took it down so her mom wouldn’t see it. Her mom was so nice, complete opposite of her daughter. 
She would also have conversations on her phone all hours of the night on speaker phone and I could hear both sides of the conversation. I had to resort to getting earplugs to be able to sleep. 
She ruined my baking sheet, I took it away and she had to buy one for everyone else to use. She cut into the sheet, a deep cut. It nearly went through the whole sheet.

I didn’t go to college but moved out at 18 as soon as I graduated. I got an apartment with my guy best friend, brother who was 17 at the time and my bf. Not a good idea 🙃. My friend was fucking disgusting. Literally would rather let shit rot than clean. Same with my brother. Our apartment literally wreaked constantly bc my bf and I worked 40+ hrs a week and couldn’t keep up with the cleaning bc my friend and brother were home most of the time and didn’t even work half as much as we did. I had to kick my brother out bc he wouldn’t pay any bills, made me give him rides EVERYWHERE otherwise he wouldn’t go to work if I didn’t. Also was very mentally abusive. Would say the absolute worst things to me and it ended up making my relationship with my bf difficult bc he was tired of me not standing up for myself against my brother. After my brother moved out my friend started having my ex, and a guy who tried raping me over constantly (he knew he had too). They’d go in my room and talk shit about having bras out and taking my shit. Also had his girlfriend over almost every day. She never paid a single bill, helped clean and would walk around in her underwear every day. He would even leave her at our apartment while he was gone a lot of the time bc she didn’t have a car or job and he didn’t wanna take her home. My bf and I have had our own apartment since September now and our relationship has never been better ❤️

I've also had a horrible roommate experience outside of college. Not long after I graduated I moved to a new city to cook for a restaurant. Since it's a huge tourist town the rent is so freaking ridiculous for the small town it is. I had to rent a room the first few months I was here. Then I found the perfect place downtown with two other people. Eventually those two people were moving out a month after I moved in and I had to find people to replace them for the rent to be as low as it was since it was divided by 3 people. I thought I found the perfect person she was in culinary school and I had graduated from a culinary school and we got along great. Well turns out she was a scam artist and the landlords never done an official background check on her, she moved in and she lied about so much stuff who she was, lied about not having kids but come to find out she lost custody of them and had a criminal background and was in prison for$20,000 in larceny and a ton of other charges. Because of her I lost everything I worked hard for. We were evicted from our house and were almost homeless. I had to get the police involved to get my stuff back which she lied about but confessed to everything when the officer contacted her. I filed a report, prosecutor accepted it and I had a court case against her. She was also on probation at the time but I didn't know until the officer asked if I knew. Theres so much more but I'll save that for my book. After that fiasco I never got a roommate again.

My roommate freshman year was TERRIBLE! Within the first few weeks she started freaking out if I left without telling her where I was going and inviting her with. She did not think I should have a social life outside of her.
THEN she started dating this guy who lived down the hall. She basically moved into his room because he had a single, which was fine except that neither of them knew how to function as adults and never cleaned or did dishes. Again, that would have been fine, except when all their dishes got dirty she started “borrowing” mine. She’d bring my bowls and stuff to his dorm and wouldn’t return them saying that her boyfriend was going to clean them first. Finally, like a month later, I told her I didn’t have any dishes left and I would clean then myself. She brought them back covered in mold. I needed to buy all new dishes. 
I moved to a different room before the semester was over and had a great roommate who I’m still close friends with.
The original roommate dropped out midway through second semester after her boyfriend’s parents pulled him out of school because he wasn’t going to classes or really functioning at all on his own.

Mine were so bad, I paid extra for a single-person apartment from then on. On my second attempt at roommates, I ended up with someone with severe Borderline. I could probably write a book about the crazy things she did. Before that, I ended up with Jersey Shore. On a good note, moving in with my husband when we were dating was smooth sailing.
