Pacifier?

Question

When should I introduce a pacifier?
I’m a second time mom and with my son I waited 6 weeks until my milk supply was well established before introducing a pacifier. I tried for 2 weeks to get him to take it, tried different brands also and he just didn’t care for it. He preferred/prefers his thumb… my daughter is 1 month as of today so I’m wondering should I wait another 2 weeks or should I introduce one now? Also, do breastfed babies even need a paci? I’m asking cause my husband is saying she “needs” one…. She’s been super gassy lately and we’re cluster feeding so to him the cluster feeding means she need a paci since “she doesn’t want milk, she just wants something to suck” so I’m at a crossroads right now….

1) Cluster feeding is part of the bonding process, and while she might just want to suck for comfort she is eating some of that time too
2) I’ve never heard of waiting with the paci- the hospital offered it to both my kids (with our permission) and didn’t mention any concerns. If she seems ready for it I don’t think offering will hurt anything

No, baby doesn’t “need” a pacifier, which is essentially a replacement for mom. Many babies don’t even like them. My son hates them, has since we got him home and on the breast. He only ever used one in the NICU while being bottle fed. I’ve tried it a couple of times when he was gassy but he just spit them out.
You can introduce one if you like, there’s nothing inherently wrong with them, but it’s better in my opinion for baby not to get used to them as it can create bad habits or issues with sleeping. My son sucks his thumb sometimes to calm down a bit if I don’t respond immediately, or when I’m changing his diaper.

Your husband doesn't know what he's talking about. No baby NEEDS a pacifier, though some like them and find comfort in them. With my first the hospital tried to force one on him at 4 days old(he was under billilights, it was really stressful) but he never took to it. With my second I never even tried it and I won't with my third either.
Clusterfeeding is totally normal and has nothing to do with needing a pacifier. It helps establish your supply and can also be a sign of growth spurts.

It’s up to you. !!! I gave my baby hers the minute we we’re checked into our room after leaving the delivery floor . Its up to us. They don’t have to get one we make that decision

Neither of my kids ever really took a pacifier. Every now and then they might for like 5 min but then spit it out. Babies don’t need them. One less thing to have to take away from them later on haha

I never even give my babies a pacifier. They say it reduces the chances of sids a bit but I don’t see what else they’re good for..
