What would you do if you walk upon a snake in your house?

Oh my gosh! Let me just tell you how my afternoon went yesterday. I started to go downstairs and got halfway and noticed a baby snake crawling up the stairway, and I immediately turn around quickly as I'm panicking to go call my stepdad to come kill it or do whatever to it and I'm staying on top of the stairway watching it and making sure it does it come up further up the steps to my bedroom for my son's bedroom and even the bathroom, but it stayed put till my step dad got home to get it and he doesn't like snake either, but he got some gloves and caught it with a stick and a glove he had on and put it in a garbage can that I threw down to him because I was not going outside to get up on the garbage cans outside, but anyway my stepdad put it in that garbage can and release it back outside which I don't know why but I think it was and baby rat snake and I don't know for sure if that what it was but it was black spots with a goldish trim on it, but I don't care what kind of snake it was, I just want it gone because I am highly terrified of snakes.

How common are snakes to get inside your house? This was the first time I ever found a snake inside my home,which I do live around a bunch of trees and lake.

My stepdad says we have rat snakes around here but I don't know since I don't go outside very much.
