Husband all of a sudden doesn’t like pets

So I’m a huge animal lover, always have been. I grew up on a farm and even when I moved away from that farm I continued to volunteer at shelters and started to foster dogs. My husband and I have one dog and one cat but I’ve always talked about wanting more AND wanting farm animals too even from the very beginning of our relationship. He always loved the idea until recently.

What seems like out of nowhere he tells me that he doesn’t want any pets because it’s “inhumane” and that we “torture” them. He saw some videos or documentary or something about statistically how many pets are abused and just ran with it. I asked him why he would say that when he knows we give our pets a very loving home and he tells me it’s because he just doesn’t want to be part of the problem….

He then told me that he doesn’t even want to be in control of the animals that we already have and that’s when I lost it. I can understand if he doesn’t want any future pets but how could you basically disown the two pets you already have?? We had an argument about it and now when I refer to him as “Dad” he gets upset and he’s like no I’m not their dad.

I just don’t understand what happened?? I always made it clear I wanted pets in my life and he even told me he would love to own chickens one day.. but now he’s sooo against the idea of pets??

I told him he was hurting my feelings when he said that people who have pets are just sad lonely people. I said??? I’m not sad or lonely?? And he’s like oh well not you of course babe. But how am I supposed to not get offended by that?

Growing up on a farm and just being around animals my whole life I always knew I wanted to grow a farm for myself one day. Not to mention we picked our current house because of the amount of land so that we can have a farm. Like is this just some weird phase because he saw some dumb video or what?? I’m so confused! Every conversation and big decisions we’ve made were generally surrounded by the idea of our farm future idea.
