Allergic reaction to Benadryl??

I have been taking Benadryl at night to help me sleep. The past couple weeks I have had a rash on my arm and now another weird spot appears two days ago on my neck. Has anyone ever had an allergic reaction to Benadryl?? I just can't think of what else it could be.

Yes it is totally possible to have a reaction to benadryl. Histamines are typically the main cause of allergic reactions, but there are many mechanisms and pathways to block them and diphenhydramine (benadryl) is just one of many. There are also other chemicals involved in allergic reactions, so just because benadryl is an antihistamine, doesn't mean you can't experience side effects from it. This is particularly common when it's combined with other medications or if you're taking too much, but it can occur at normal doses with no other drug interactions too. If you are taking the classic pink benadryl, the red dye is known to cause allergic reactions.

Benadryl is an antihistamine, which means it blocks the mechanism that causes an allergic reaction... I've never heard of an allergy to something that blocks the allergic reaction

Are the rashes appearing during the daytime or at night after you've taken the benedryl? Since you are taking the benedryl at night to help you sleep, if they are appearing during the day, your benedryl will have worn off by then. It actually looks like hives, which benedryl typically helps relieve. One way to test would be to stop taking benedryl for a few days and see what happens. I doubt it is the benedryl, but you never know. You can always ask your doctor.

Fck benadryl that sht makes you drowsy..yuck. try warm chamomile tea with milk or soy milk..yum!!

You may be having a reaction to one of the inactive ingredients... except why were you taking it in the first place?  I'd call your doc or go to an urgent care center of its as bad as it looks in the pictures, you may need a different treatment.

I agree with a previous poster- you could very well be allergic to an inactive ingredient. You should stop taking and contact your doctor. I have seen people note on forms at my work (school) allergies to benadryl... Also, talk to the doctor about other options for sleep, like melatonin.
