Pitocin?

Question

So I'm watching labor delivery videos on YouTube, just kinda seeing the process and trying to create an idea of what it'll be like in my head and every other video I hear a woman make a comment about Pitocin and how they really don't want it. I know it's used to speed up contractions and induce labor but what exactly is bad about it and why do women try to avoid it? Just curious, I like to stay educated. 😊

They say that pitocin makes labor more painful because it forces your body to have contractions.

I had an awful experience and will never to pitocin again. It does speed up contractions, but if if you are not properly effaced, etc. (a.k.a. Your body isn't naturally ready to have your baby) then it makes the process way longer and way painful. Our bodies are built to gradually increase pain threshold over the course of labor. Once pitocin kicks in it's like going 0 to 60 in a short amount of time.

I didnt want pitocin because one of the risks is uterine hemorrhage. I voiced my concern to my doctor and she told me that its rare and she felt comfortable giving it to me. Fast forward to induction day. I was given pitocin and the contractions were thee worse pain ive ever felt, i have a very high pain tolerance. I had planned a natural birth with no drugs. Due to the pain of my contractions i ended up getting an epidural. After the epidural I was able to relax and went from 6cm-10cm just in 1 hour. 20 min of pushing and my son was here. I ended up having a third degree tear and having uterine hemorrhage, just like I feared. Im laying there wondering if i was going to get the chance to see my son grow up. I see the panic in my doctors eyes and can see my reflection in the light above me. Blood was pooring out and they were stuffing gauze inside of me to try and control the bleeding. The doctor told me they might have to take me to the OR. But ended up calling in some other doctors to help. An hour and a half later they were able to stop the bleeding. My room looked like something from the movie Carrie..im so thankful to be here today and am so lucky. Sorry for the long story. Just wanted u to realize that there are more risks to pitocin other than just painful contractions.

I was supposed to get induced but I ended up going into labor on my own that day. I wasn't dialating at all so they gave me pitocin. I've never felt pain that strong before in my life. I had the most painful contractions every 3-5 seconds and I was crying hysterically from the pain. Thank god for the epidural that numbed me and I couldn't feel it anymore! I was able to be pain free and relax a little bit before I started to push. From my personal experience, i won't be asking for pitocin ever again. I have a very high pain tolerance and I was still in so much pain I can't even put it in words.

Every intervention comes with risks...look up risks of induction and risks of epidurals. Nothing is risk free. I also recommend watching the Business of Being Born, it's on Netflix.

I've had pitocin with all 3 of my kids and no pain meds. I never knew it made contractions stronger...just thought that's what it was suppose to feel like.
