He leaves me on read

So I’ve been talking to this guy for a year maybe and it’s just been clear that the feeling is mutual but I always feel like I have to be the one to start the conversation and although I have nothing wrong with that, it’s just that he always leaves me on read and I don’t want to feel annoying by texting constantly to be left on opened all the time. What should I do? Ignore him? Confront him? I’m confused.
