Is social media good for society?

Proponents say that the online communities promote increased interaction with friends and family; offer teachers, librarians, and students valuable access to educational support and materials; facilitate social and political change; and disseminate useful information rapidly.
Opponents say that the sites prevent face-to-face communication; waste time on frivolous activity; alter children’s brains and behavior making them more prone to ADHD; expose users to predators like pedophiles and burglars; and spread false and potentially dangerous information

I don't think that people realize the good social media does because it's so pervasive. It's influencing parts of your life you don't even notice! 
I mean Glow is social media. With so many people coming together and exchanging relationship/health/pregnancy/ttc advice, I think good happens on here every day. I know I've learned a LOT about the body here. 
Facebook, too. It was through Facebook that my uncle realized our family could reclaim it's Luxembourgish citizenship. We're now EU citizens. 
I'm still in touch with my old exchange student on snap chat. I can reconnect with old friends, too. 
It's great when used properly and moderation. 
I don't even like to go on it, I don't have Facebook or twitter or instagram anymore. But it is a great positive if used well

Moderation is Key! It has extreme positives but also extreme negatives if you don't have a balance. I don't think this is necessarily a "yes" or "no" question

I feel like it is good in moderation. But also very bad. I don’t think things should rely on social media so much. But it’s easier to advertise things and just an easy way out of friendships relationship everything. I have no problem with it in moderation. My children won’t be reliant on it like this new generation is.

Anything has the potential to be good and bad for society. Social media is not inherently bad and has the potential to do a world of good - in fact it already has countless times. Society isn’t good for society. People determine whether something will be detrimental to their society or not through their behaviour. Social media isn’t the problem, the people using it are.

I think it's a two-sided coin. When used appropriately, social media is a positive thing because it has  increased our access to knowledge, given us a platform on which to communicate and share ideas and raise awareness to issues. etc. However, the flip side to that coin is that many people can't discern legit information from propaganda unfortunately which I feel has divided us not to mention another avenue for bullies to torment people  As an aside, I'm a true crime junkie, and I feel that innocent until proven guilty has gone by the wayside in the dawn of social media. The court of public opinion is a bitch. As someone who has lived before the internet was a widely used thing, I can say that it has certainly impacted our society both negatively and positively.

Generally speaking, yes social media is a good thing. It can be used in a negative way though, but that doesn’t make the platform bad.

With mostly everything, it has pros and cons. I like that it exists. I wouldn’t want to revert to a world where we didn’t have it. And I don’t even utilize all the most popular sites and apps.
