It can be part of your mucus plug. But it regenerates. It's absolutely not a sign labor is near. It's common to lose pieces of it throughout your entire pregnancy and still deliver late.
When it's a huuuuge glob and has blood in it, that's when it's most likely time to head in.

I don't think it is. I get it every now and again and I haven't gone into labor yet😉 I've heard that a mucus plug would have some brown or pink in it? Hope this helps. x
