Brothers pt.21a

Christmas at the Phillips Manor was nothing less than extravagant. Every corner, every shelf, every window & door was decked with a wreath or tinsel or some sign of the holiday. Mrs. Phillips even hires someone to dress up as Santa to come & sing some Christmas carols with everyone. Christmas was usually Leila’s favorite time of the year, but this year she found herself quite miserable. She hid behind her bubbly personality & smiling face. James had a different way of coping. In the recent days he drowned himself in alcohol & sleeping most of the day away. Mr. Phillips noticed James’ behavior & pulled him aside during the Christmas party.

Mr. Phillips: She’s just a girl, James. Get a grip.

James: She’s more than that.

Mr. Phillips: Oh please, don’t tell me you love her.

James proceeds to walk away. Mr. Phillips grabs his son.

Mr. Phillips: Get rid of any feelings you have for this girl. The sooner you do it, the better off you’ll be.

James walks away. Leila catches a glimpse of all of this. In the hustle & bustle of all the people of the party, it was easy to slip away without getting noticed. She went up to James’ room & waited for him to come up. Minutes later as everyone started singing Christmas carols, James’ fled the scene & made his way to his room. He was drunk & wanted to sleep the rest of the day & avoid seeing his brother with Leila.

James walked in his room, took his jacket & shoes off & sat on his bed. Leila came up from behind him & started kissing his neck & nibbling on his ears. James turned around & was so happy to see Leila.

Leila: Merry Christmas, James.

James: Merry Christmas...
