Would the name Priya be weird on a non-Indian child?

I love the name Priya. It's a Sanskrit named meaning "beloved". Some family members say they think Priya would be a weird name for our daughter because my husband and I aren't Indian. I'm white and my husband is Latino.

I would talk to someone of that culture and speak to them about the meaning and power behind the name and more of it’s origin. It’s important to know cultural names can come with a lot of other things that if you’re not part of that culture you may miss.

It is absolutely fine. If that were the case, then people who weren't of certain descents couldn't use even common names. Like David or Katherine. Unless of course their ancestors are from Isreal or Greece.... but if they're 100% Irish, then its a no go. 🙄🙄 that's just ridiculous.

Nope, my best friends name is Kapria (her nickname everyone calls her Pria or Priya). She’s African American.

Feels like cultural appropriation to me. I personally wouldn’t but if you’re strongly considering it, I suggest talking with a few people from that culture about their feelings on it first.
