💔❓How to break up with a boy nicely❓💔

So I dated this guy for about 3 years and we had recently taken a “break” because we were going through a lot with school at two different colleges. During our break I’ve realized how much happier I am and how much I let him control my life. Point was that I wasn’t happy in our relationship. Now that he’s back home he wants to officially get back together but I don’t want to. I’ve tried to tell him that I don’t want to be together for many outside reasons not involving our relationship. He kept telling me that we will work through it and won’t let me go. How do I make it clear that I don’t want to be with him, but in a nice way?
