When is it safe to give my baby a blanket?

My daughter is almost 14 months old and growing out of her sleep sacks. She also likes to stand and walk in her crib after naps. She is a healthy little girl, walking and talking and eating and mostly sleeping through the night. She sleeps in her crib, in her own room. She does sleep with a little comfort lovey. I hate the idea of buying more sleep sacks. They're expensive. Plus spring/summer is right around the corner. Is it safe at this point to let her have a light blanket? Maybe even a knitted one with holes?

Depends on where you live in the world. In Norway (Scandinavia and Finland actually) the recommendation is baby sized duvets from births. They even get one at the hospital straight after birth. 
Yet the infant mortality rate here is way lower than in the US.

We switched blankets with onesies.. To make sure the blankets stayed in place I tucked them under the mattress of the bed. (he's a kicker) 
But he's slept with loose blankets too even in his few days after birth, he's almost 7 months now.
I think the local official recommendation is a sheet tucked under the mattress? (on 3 sides)

Not yet.  I just put my son to sleep with fleece footed jammies with a onesie underneath.  He stays plenty warm that way

12 months is the minimum age a child should be okay to sleep with a blanket but I think it's recommended to wait until at least 18 months.

She’s had a blanket for months now, she’s 14 months and she cannot sleep without it. No fleece, just a 40 year old breathable cotton blanket that used to belong to her uncle. I’m really not concerned. Baby was born in Europe and got so many duvets as gifts, these things are cultural!

I’m not sure of the recommendations tbh, but neither of my kids were ready for blankets at that age. My first was closer to 3 when he finally figured out blankets keep you warm and didn’t just kick them off first thing. And my baby is 21 months and has no idea what to do with a blanket except put it under his head as a pillow lol. So if you’re trying to keep baby warm I’d probably rely on sleep sacks a little longer. There are some on Amazon that are cheaper than Halo and have worked great for us. I have a $13 one and wash it once a week same as I do blankets since he’s fresh out of the bath when he puts it on and doesn’t do anything to really dirty it.

Both my kids have a knitted blanket from their great grandma that they have slept with since a year old. They love their blankets. For the longest time my daughter would ONLY have her bunny and blanket in her toddler bed. No toddler pillow, no other stuffed animals or blankets. Now that she's 3, I have to sneak in her room after she falls asleep to pull all her books and toys out of her bed.

I don't think it's a safety issue at this point, but if your little is anything like mine, that blanket is not going to stay on! There are cheaper sleep sacks on amazon, and even footless ones if you want her to be able to walk easily. I have my climber in a full sleep sack in the hopes he won't figure out how to escape any time soon!

My daughter slept with footed fleece pjs with socks and a onesie underneath.  We didn’t give her a blanket until she was about 20-21 months.
