Loving babies but not being able to have one

My boyfriend and I have been having sex without protection, both his side and mine, and without pulling out. My menstrual cycle isn't always regular. I had my period last month July and I didn't get it this month August. I get my period the last week of the month when I do get it. I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative. Is it possible that I took it too early?
