Laboring at home? (Before a hospital birth)

Question

When did you ladies go to the hospital or birth center once contractions started? Did you stay at home until contractions were a certain time apart? Did your doctor tell you to stay home until a certain point? I'm just curious, this is my first baby and I'm only 27 weeks so my doctor hasn't said anything yet.  I've been reading about all things baby/pregnancy since before I was pregnant and I see stuff where people say they were in labor for 20 hours, are they in the hospital in labor for 20 hours?

Your doctor will usually go over that at a appointment soon. Usually they follow a code. 5-1-1. Contractions 5 min apart for an hours lasting an hour. Or something similar if you live close to a hospital. Just ask at your next appointment.

With my second i started feeling the contractions at about 330am.n thought it was false labor because i was only 32 34 weeks dont really remember.....i stayed home because i always had false labor with my oldest...it wasn't till about 1145 am when i went to the hospital n three only reason i did was because i started bleeding...the pain wasn't bad...when i got to the hospital the labor n delivery nurse i observation told my husband well sweetie its going to b a while if got want to go get something to eat..well he left after him asking if that was fine with me....After he walk out. 10 mins later the nurse check me n said oh dear u might want to call him back your about to start pushing soon you 6 1/2 cm already......so back to you're question i will be at home as long as possible..plus i only live like 2mins away from muy hospital..

I knew my labor would be long. I stayed home for the first 9 hours then went to the hospital with my first. I was in labor a total of 24 hours so I wish if stayed home longer. Being my first I was worried about not getting there in time. Now I know the feeling of dialation and I plan to stay home longer this time around. 
I'd say it's personal preference.

It depend on how far you live from the hospital. If you live close by you can labor at home longer and time out your contractions. Some hospitals will send you home if the contractions stents within a certain time.
