How many words should an 8 month old say?

I know every baby is different. 
But how many words could your 8 month (almost 9) old say?
My baby boy can only say mama and recently “mo” for more. 
He has a cleft Palate so he can’t make the “d” for dada. 
Along with any sound you have to use suction with your tongue on your palate for such as “n” & “t” 
How many words is normal for this age? I’m starting to worry he should be saying more!

Hi, I am a speech language pathologist who is experienced in working with young children. The fact that he is saying any words at this point is excellent! We expect the first single words around 12 months. Because he was born with cleft, he should receive some speech therapy to help ensure that he develops all of his sounds appropriately and to reduce nasality that a lot of people with cleft tend to have. As long as he is babbling and responding to you, dont be worried!

Don't worry!! I found this on line. I don't remember my LO saying much other than Hi and momma at that age.

Mine will be 9 months Feb 16 and doesn’t say one word. But understands a lot of words that I say and I have taught him a little baby sign language.

Plenty of babies at 8 months don't say any words at all. As long as baby is babbling, you're good.
