What is the secret for picking lipstick colors?

Every time I go to buy lipstick, I pick out colors that I think will look good against my skin tone, only to get it on my lips and its way too dark or way too light...  How do I pick the right colors?
I'm very fair skinned btw if anyone has suggestions for colors to try.

I have heard before that you should pick a shade of lipstick that is the same shade as your nipples and it will compliment you. 
Not sure where I heard that but...it’s worth a try! 💄

You could search online for a chart that tells you which colors look best for your skin tone. It also helps if you know whether you’re cool or warm toned

Let someone do it for you, at any Ulta, or Sephora- or any major department store, all of those counters like Clinique, Lancôme, etc will also help you
