It depends on how the person puts it. “I think we need some space” sounds like a breakup. “I just need a little space to myself for a bit” not so much. As long as it is clear what this “space” is for and how long you’ll be taking it.

Ask the person what exactly does he or she mean... break up or just time apart? Ask if that means he or she will be dating others... gotta communicate and find out from them what they want

If someone needs space then I would consider it a break up. I wouldn’t stay focused on that person because any thing can happen during that break. When your married and need a break you go to another room for a bit, not live life like your single. But I’m also ruthless and will not play games if I’m not serious about a person and won’t waste anyone’s time.

Honestly it just depends the situation. My boyfriend and I have been dating for two years and 10 months and have taken 2 breaks in our relationship. When we took the breaks they only lasted a few days and the first one lasted not even a day. It was at times when we felt we were both in a hard spot and wanted time to think for ourselves or times when we were constantly arguing and aggravated and just wanted to take a little break from talking to sort things out that were in our heads. Communication is always the key, but sometimes after being with someone for so long it is nice to have a little one day break especially when things get tough and you’re battling your own things as well. It doesn’t always mean a breakup is around the corner. It just depends on the situation.
