What does a break mean?

My boyfriend asked me a few hours ago to go on a break. I still see him everyday cause of school, to me a break means that they’re giving up and don’t care about the other persons  feelings. But people keep telling me different things. What does a break mean? And are they every successful?

I don’t give people breaks, if they aren’t willing to discuss issues and try to resolve them i just break up for good.

I break basically means so they can fuck other people, plain and simple... If you're in a relationship, why would you want a break. You either work through it or break up. No in between

A break can be a good thing as long as boundaries are set. Some people use breaks to go do whatever they want. A break doesn't mean act single and have sex with other people unless that is a rule you have both agreed upon. I would talk to him about this so you aren't in the dark.

A break means different things to different people. Ask your bf exactly what he means. 
For example, for me, a break is this: we haven’t been getting along, I need some space. Don’t call, don’t text, and don’t expect anything out of me. I need to evaluate if I even want to be with you anymore. I will still respect the bf/gf boundaries we set, but most importantly, need space away from you. 
In previous relationships, the breaks I went on with my exes showed me how much I wanted to move on. So yes it worked in that sense (not in saving the relationship) because we’re all happier people these days. 
Last tidbit: you said you will still see him in school. So for him to ask for a break means a lot. He knew this and still asked it of you. Think about what that means. He probably isn’t into the relationship as much as he use to be or he’s having other personal issues he doesn’t want to involve you at all. Either way, always put yourself first.
