I've been taking Yaz for the past 3 years, same manufacturer (Bayer). I've read about the lawsuits and side effects of both, however luckily I haven't had any side effects. I cannot begin to describe how much better my life is now. I initially went on the pill at age 20 to prevent pregnancies, little did I know they could help me with so much more. 
I got my first period age 9. I used to have horrible bloating and cramps that left me in bed for days (I don't have endo even though that is the level of pain I've experienced montly for 11 years). My periods were super irregular, I either got multiple periods per month or none in a few months. I now get my periods on exactly the same day, (Saturday) every 28 days, or 4 weeks. My periods are light, last 3-4 days. Except for the pad changes I don't even feel like I'm on my period, I can go to work, go to the gym, go out and be active. I used to miss entire school days because of how severe my periods were before. I even used to pass out while on my periods because the pain was so severe.
Most gynecologist are very against birth control in my country, they would never prescribe them to anyone (let alone to help with menstruation). The lenghts you have to go to to get them is ridiculous, luckily I found a private clinic which is more open minded. Birth control has changed my life.
I've always had nice skin, but it's even better now (I didn't even know people use birth control for that). I have no issue with unprotected sex, it has never failed me once (I'm married, so condoms made our life miserable).
With that being said, I only had 2 options to choose from: Yaz and some other ones that were way too 'strong for me' according to my gyno. 
I am not a doctor or a gynecologist, so it's best to read my comment as my personal experience. With all being said, people have had serious side effects both on Yaz and Yasmin. The main difference between  them is that Yaz also helps with the skin, so you should talk to a professional to find what's best for you. I know you guys in the US have a lot of options to choose from, so make sure you get tests done and find your best option. Good luck ❤
