How would you feel about paying a fee?

Teja

I contacted a well known person in response to an add for an mentorship.

She wanted to help women of colour in her industry. She seems really genuine so far. Now she's asking for a fee to pay for a segment of our meetings. It isn't much, however a part of me feels like she should have offered to cover the cost - since she was the one that decided to do these mentorship. She gave the impression she wanted to give back. I know of other well known artists in her industry that have covered the cost of internships /sponsorships /courses. Anyway like I said, it isn't alot and I will be paying the fee. I just found it a little odd

What are your thoughts?

i have never paid someone for an internship lmao. it's definitely a red flag. i wouldn't pay even if it was a low fee bc it seems extremely sketchy. i've done internship matching programs before and never paid a dime out of pocket to them. i would honestly just keep looking and attend virtual networking workshops in the meantime.

mentorships are also unpaid. they're essentially like having a professional friendship with someone experienced. none of my mentors have ever charged me either. you're right in that it's definitely something people do bc they genuinely want to, not to make a quick buck. i treat my mentees like little siblings and don't charge them. it's standard to not expect them to pay.

Hey, I actually meant mentorship which is not much different. I mean for some reason I'm thinking I'll miss out on something but my first thought was wait, you can't cover the cost of it. If you did this with good intentions then I thought you would cover the costs. I actually thought this was going to be a great opportunity after not getting through with a few others

Not at all. It's a casual setting where she gives advice since she's in the industry and helps us with getting clients etc

Is there some sort of contract, written agreement, or a document of expectations from both of you?

Anyone that charges money for “mentor ship” sounds like a scam.
