Group b strep??

Question

What is it and did you have to have a c section cause of it ?? My hospital doctor called to schedule a pre op appointment because I think they found it in my pee is it deadly ? Harmful ? I don’t know I wanted a Vbac this time honestly and the fact I won’t get my birth that way really makes me cry I didn’t wanna be cut open again . Can someone give me feedback please I’m scared

No, GBS is incredibly common, about 1-4 test positive for it. It’s a naturally occurring bacteria found in your vagina and anus. 
Typically if you test positive, they just recommend hooking you up to IV antibiotics in labor. This is your choice though, you can decline the IV antibiotics if you prefer. The antibiotics will help prevent the potential of spreading the bacteria to baby at time of birth, but it also comes with risks that you have to decide are worth the benefits depending on your own situation. For example - I’m declining them because I’m allergic to amoxicillin and don’t take penicillin as a result. So I’d have to have a less effective antibiotic. I’m also extremely sensitive to yeast infections due to antibiotics, which could then result in oral thrush in baby and cause issues with breastfeeding. For me, (if I test positive at all), I don’t find the risks worth the benefits. But for someone else, it’s worth it. 
Do your research and decide what’s best for you. But you do NOT have to have a c-section just because you test positive for GBS. You could test positive at 36 weeks and then negative at 39-40 weeks, it’s a normally occurring bacteria.

You don’t need a C-section. You just are on antibiotics during labor and delivery (through IV usually) to help prevent passing it to baby.if you refuse antibiotics, they usually keep baby longer for monitoring and it’s a longer hospital stay

They’ll give you antibiotics while in labor and you can still have a vaginal delivery. I had it my last pregnancy and my daughter is perfectly fine. Just be sure to let the hospital know that you have group strep b so they can start the antibiotics.

I had this with my first child, and they gave me an antibiotic at birth so that it wouldn’t spread to my son. This time, I get tested in about a week. A dietician spoke about new studies finding that prebiotics taken during pregnancy can help you get rid of the Strep B before baby is born! I have been taking them for almost two weeks, so I’m curious if I’ll still have it when I get tested this time or not!

A lot of women have group b strep pregnant or not. It’s a normal bacteria that we have and may come and go throughout life. If you tested positive, they will give you an antibiotic because it can cause meningitis in your newborn be being exposed in the vaginal canal. As long as it’s being treated though, baby will be fine! Make sure you tell your nurse right away though so she knows

Hi there! I’m an OB nurse. GBS is not an indication for a section! They will give you penicillin IV during labor to treat you and this protects baby from contracting GBS.
