How am I supposed to respond when people tell me I'm African but in reality I am African American and my family has been here for centuries?
So I look west African but I'm black American and was raised with black Americans culture. I'll cook soul food or American food and people will literally assume I wasn't raised on these foods and say I should cook food of my culture.
Am I supposed to just say I'm from Wakanda and make up a language and culture to please these people? Or what? When I say I'm AA they look at me like they've seen a ghost.
I've done DNA testing and my lineage dates back to the 1700s with 10% Irish ancestry. So I'm definitely black American. I dark and I don't have much cream in my coffee. 😉
I get tired of having people assume things and having to always explain myself.
