The reclaiming of ‘queer’

🪐 E.T 🪐

I assume most of you know that ‘queer’ is a slur that was (and still is) used against LGBT people, to harass, bully and degrade them for their sexuality and gender.

However, the slur has been reclaimed by many LGBT people, and is even being used as a descriptor for peoples sexual identity and gender now. I think reclaiming a slur can be a very positive thing for the effected group, within reason.

I think the main problem with the increasingly casual use of the slur is that 1. It is being used openly by the oppressors (aka heterosexual cis people), and 2. It is being used towards LGBT people who still find the slur to be offensive.

Why do you think it has become so acceptable for this particular slur to be used by just anybody? And if you do personally find it acceptable for anybody to use casually, would you feel the same way if other degrading slurs used towards lgbt people were used in a similar way? (Eg d*ke, f*g, tr*nny etc)
