weird period! please help

This is my first month ttc, my husband and I BD when I thought I may be ovulating and then convinced myself that I was pregnant for the last 2 weeks lol. Then a few days before my AF was due I have literally one spot of pinkish white discharge then nothing. Then a day before my AF due (2days ago) I thought it started (reddish/brown) then nothing since. I did a hpt which was negative and I have some cramping. Has anyone else had this? Also if it is my AF when would I count day 1 of my cycle when I first bleed or when it's in full flow?
