Is it strange for an African American to be very dark skin?

I am trying to figure out why everyone assumes I'm African but in reality my family is AA and been here for centuries.
My skin is the darkest shade possible.
I don't get it because my family comes in all shades.  From super dark to super super light skinned.

as K said…your ancestry is literally African lol. there are all kinds of ranges of skin tones in every race.

You have darker skin because you’re African… The country you live in doesn’t matter. You’re going to resemble whatever your race/ethnicity is. For example, an Asian-American is still going to look Asian because, well, they’re Asian, even if they live in the US.
